JVC conversion technology helps re-release big titles, now in 3D

'I, Robot', which earned an Oscar nomination for best special effects, will be released on Blu-ray 3D later this year thanks to JVC technology.

JVC Kenwood and Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment have announced that Yo, Robot, the hit sci-fi film will be the first title to be released on Blu-ray 3D for home theater.

JVC has developed a new 2D-3D conversion process to convert movies to Blu-ray 3D, thus helping to recover, now in stereoscopy, great cinema blockbusters.

Consulting firm Futuresource predicts there will be around 8.8 million homes with HD 3D televisions by the end of 2012 and more than 18 million by the end of 2013. Growing interest in the format will bring greater demand for quality 3D movies to the market.

Danny Kaye, executive vice president of Global Research and Strategy at Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment, commented that "advances in this 3D conversion technology developed by JVC have exceeded our most optimistic expectations. We look forward to bringing visually stunning films like I Robot into the home on Blu-ray 3D."

“One of the major obstacles to achieving broad acceptance of 3D in the home has been the limited amount of content of interest to the public,” said Kazuhiro Aigami, executive vice president and CEO of JVC Kenwood Corporation. “This new process enables the development of a business model for the release of classic 3D film titles for the home entertainment market,” he added.
