Ericsson is betting on the new HEVC/H.265 standard and launching an encoder that enables an improved television viewing experience for consumers using mobile devices by providing up to 50 percent savings in bandwidth, while improving image quality.

Coinciding with IBC 2012, Ericsson will launch the first HEVC/H.265 encoder for the delivery of live and linear television over networks and mobile devices. It offers real-time encoding with up to HD resolution, significantly reducing bandwidth requirements for current and future services. This enables operators to deliver consistent, high-quality TV experiences on mobile devices and meet consumers' growing expectations for TV anywhere, whether at home or on the go.

Ericsson ConsumerLab has shown that up to 50 percent of TV/video consumption on today's smartphones is done outside the home, growing 5 percent since 2011. A July 2012 report from Juniper Research suggests that the number of mobile TV streaming users on smartphones will increase to 240 million in 2014. This trend is driven by consumers' strong desire for immediate access to content such as live sports and news with the ability to interact. with social networks.

The new High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) standard promises to reduce bandwidth requirements for video delivery by more than 50 percent compared to H.264/MPEG-4 AVC standards. This proposal has been developed by Joint Collaborative Team-Video Coding (JCT-VC), in a joint project with ITU-T Video Coding Experts Group (VCEG) and the ISO/IECE Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG).

Ove Anebygd, Vice President and Head of TV, Ericsson, commented that "we are experiencing a drastic change in consumer habits towards television. Although they watch a high-definition screen at home, they increasingly consume content on other devices, whether at home via Wi-Fi or outside the home over 3G and 4G networks. Consumers are looking for the simple, enjoyable and perfect way to consume content, in any way and anywhere. At Ericsson we really understand “How new industry standards and technologies must be developed and applied to benefit both the operator and the consumer. That is why we have also pioneered the adoption and application of the HEVC specification for mobile use for the first time.”
