Canon has ranked first among Japanese companies and third among global companies in the number of patents registered in the US in 2012, according to information published by IFI CLAIMS Patent Services.

Preliminary published results indicate that Canon registered 3,174 new patents, surpassing its own record from last year of 2,813.

Canon actively promotes the globalization of its business and considers obtaining patents abroad of great importance. The company applies for patents in different countries and regions taking into account trends in business strategies, technology and products specific to each location. For this reason, the United States, with many high-tech companies and a large-scale market, represents a particularly important region in terms of business expansion and strategic technological alliances.

Canon believes that its high priority on technology is its corporate DNA and therefore actively promotes the acquisition of patent rights in relation to the results of its R&D activity.

Through close collaboration between Canon's technology and intellectual property divisions, the company aims to enhance its technological capabilities while expanding its intellectual property rights.

Canon has remained among the top five companies with the most patents registered in the US for 27 consecutive years.
