Ericsson has just completed the purchase of the IPTV Mediaroom business unit of Microsoft. This operation places Ericsson in a strong position in the IPTV middleware solutions market with a share of around 25%.
At this moment, the Mediaroom platform serves almost 60 reference operators around the world, serving almost 13 million homes with a fleet of nearly 24 million decoders.
Per Borgklint, Senior Vice President and Head of the Support Solutions Business Unit at Ericsson, admits that "this acquisition puts us at the heart of a highly interesting and highly innovative sector. The number of IPTV subscribers is expected to grow by more than 18% each year to reach 105 million subscribers and revenues of around $45 billion in 2015. By incorporating Mediaroom into our broad portfolio of solutions we will ensure that our customers “have the latest technology for multi-screen Anywhere services and optimized video delivery on any network.”
Mediaroom is headquartered in Mountain View, California, and has 400 professionals worldwide. The Mediaroom business unit, including staff, will be integrated into the Ericsson group under the Support Solutions Business Unit, and will be called Ericsson Mediaroom from now on.
