Damián Ruiz y Conchi García Pardo, R&D Engineers en el Instituto de Telecomunicaciones y Aplicaciones Multimedia (iTEAM-UPV) han centrado su ponencia en Broadcast IT Experience en los avances en codificación para Ultra Alta Definición y la convergencia del DVB con LTE y LTE-eMBMS.

¿Qué grado de eficiencia se consigue en la difusión de contenidos audiovisuales en LTE-4G y DVB-T2? ¿Qué perspectivas de optimización aportarán los nuevos estándares de codificación como HEVC? ¿Cómo convergirán las redes broadcast y de datos y cómo afectará a la emisión? A todas estas preguntas han dado respuesta Damián Ruiz y Conchi García Pardo, R&D Engineers en el Instituto de Telecomunicaciones y Aplicaciones Multimedia (iTEAM-UPV) en su conferencia en Broadcast IT Experience.

Damián Ruiz has highlighted the numerous tests that are being carried out throughout Europe with 4K content at H.264 at 25 fps at 8 b and 50 fps at 10b. Ruiz has highlighted the high efficiency of video compression standards, especially HEVC, which have allowed improvements in efficiency of up to 50%. “High efficiency at very low bit rates (OTT) and high efficiency with very high resolution formats (UHDTV) will be key in the coming years,” he commented.

The advantage of HEVC is that its innovative technology allows maintaining a hybrid architecture with ME-MC and 2D-DCT. At this moment, demonstrations of decorders on iPad and Nexu are already underway, followed by the implementation of streaming services, ending with the approval of the final profiles in 2014, Damián Ruiz has ventured.

Regarding DVB-T2, Damián Ruiz has highlighted the efficiency of the second generation of the European standard. “Under similar network topology conditions, better objective efficiency is obtained,” admits Ruiz.

In this sense, the iTEAM working group of the Polytechnic University of Valencia is carrying out an experimental pilot in Seville with the DVB-T2 standard together with HEVC coding. Axión, Sapec and Egatel collaborate on this projector.

LTE y LTE-eMBMS

Conchi García Pardo focused her presentation on the second digital dividend and the convergence of DVB with LTE and LTE-eMBMS.

García Pardo has shared with the professionals who have attended Broadcast IT Experience some results of a field investigation that iTEAM has carried out on the use of the UHF spectrum in Colombia (the deployment of DVB-T2 has been carried out with two operators and two networks) and Spain.

Para esta investigadora, la aparición del LTE-eMBMS ha venido motivada por la pérdida de espectro para radiodifusión y la necesidad de la industria de tener espacio para distribución de contenidos. García Pardo ha destacado que emplea transmisión OFDM al igual que DVB-T/2 y cuenta con la posibilidad de implementar redes de frecuencia única, así como transmitir aa una única celda con el consiguiente uso floexible de portadoras unicast/broadcast. Sin embargo, ha admitido que no sería un canal viable para HDTV/UHDTV.
