The operator KPN and Ericsson test the possibilities of live LTE transmission over mobile networks at the Amsterdam Arena.

Amsterdam Arena

KPN, the first network operator in the Netherlands, carried out a series of tests with LTE Broadcast technology at the Amsterdam Arena on May 3, in collaboration with Ericsson, Qualcomm Technologies, Samsung e IBM.

Ericsson's LTE broadcast solution aims to elevate the video experience to a new level, offering video content of the highest quality even in crowded environments in terms of population and access such as a soccer match. This technology allows the same content to be offered simultaneously to a practically unlimited number of users, thus maintaining efficient use of spectrum and network equipment. It also allows operators and their partners to provide high-quality video services with maximum guarantee and cost-effectively over LTE, providing new sources of revenue.

Ericsson's LTE Broadcast solution promises to revolutionize video delivery over mobile networks by combining three new standards: eMBMS, HEVC and MPEG DASH.

Joost Steltenpool, Director of Access at KPN, said: "Our experience with our nationwide 4G network shows that there is clear customer demand for video content during events. Our goal was to find a solution for delivering high-quality video content to large groups of users. The key to such a solution is greater network efficiency and guaranteed quality of service. Ericsson's LTE Broadcast solution has proven to be effective at the Amsterdam Arena. KPN is excited with the success of the pilot project and is currently exploring next steps.”
