Spanish cinema achieves the best box office in its history
As of December 7, it reaches 25.5% of the market share with a collection of 123 million euros.
Spanish cinema has achieved the best box office in its history in absolute terms with 123 million euros, compared to 119.8 million in 2012, which was the highest so far.
As of December 7, according to Rentrak data, it thus reaches 25.5% of the box office in Spain, becoming the best figure in the last 37 years. Furthermore, these figures mean that Spanish cinema has grossed 75.3% more than in 2013 and viewers have increased by 89%, with 20.8 million in 2014.
The president of FAPAE, Ramon Colom, has highlighted that "the producers are happy to have managed to connect with the public through cinema intended for the general public as well as the so-called auteur cinema, giving rise to a wide catalog of films, with the aim of satisfying the different tastes of viewers. These figures justify the need to continue supporting our cinema as an example of a solid industry with many possibilities."
The FAPAE Confederation, which brings together the production companies, has congratulated both the viewers and the producers and creatives who have participated in them and made these figures possible.
For the president of FAPAE, “the networks have a fundamental role in the success of the productions and, especially, with the excellent promotion they can offer.” The productions that this year have included television participation have been very profitable, which shows that the Spanish film industry is profitable. “We have to continue building a strong and competitive industry, and all the actors who are part of it have to ‘row’ in the same direction,” he indicated.
Most viewed Spanish films
These excellent results are due to various Spanish titles, with four Spanish productions exceeding one million viewers in 2014, among which we must highlight “8 Basque Surnames” (LaZona Films, Kowalski Films, Snow Films AIE, Telecinco Cinema), which reached 56 million euros and 9.5 million viewers.
Other Spanish hits of the year have been “Mortadelo y Filemón contra Jimmy el Cachondo” (Zeta Cinema, J. Cohen Productions AIE), with 2.6 million accumulated in its second weekend of exhibition, so it still has a way to go; “Pancho, the millionaire dog” (Four Luck Banana, Antena 3 Films), with 2.5 million euros in revenue; “Perdona si te llama amor” (Forgive me if I call you love AIE), 2.1 million or “Carmina y amen” (Andy Joke, Telecinco Cinema), with almost 2 million euros.
Milestones throughout the year
Two Spanish films have been the most viewed of the year: “8 Basque surnames” has become a social phenomenon that broke all records. Not only is it the highest-grossing film of 2014, but it has become the highest-grossing Spanish feature film of all time and the second highest-grossing film in general terms, only behind “Avatar.” For its part, “El Niño” is the second most viewed film in Spain this year.
Other excellent data has been obtained throughout 2014. Spanish cinema achieved 70% of the collection on the weekend of October 4, with three films: “Torrente 5”, “La Isla Mínima” and “El Niño”.
