Blackmagic's new line of Teranex Mini converters
The new Teranex Mini models do not overheat when using 12G SDI connections and offer the possibility of converting between all types of formats in SD, HD and UHD definition.
Blackmagic has unveiled at NAB 2015 its new line of Teranex Mini converters with 12G SDI technology and a different design from the classic Mini Converters.
The latter present certain limitations such as the lack of a heat dissipation mechanism generated when using 12G SDI connections, cumbersome external power supplies, the impossibility of using conventional XLR connectors and the limitation of controls, which are generally simple switches.
The new Teranex Mini models overcome all these difficulties since they do not overheat when using 12G SDI connections and offer the possibility of converting between all types of formats in SD, HD and UHD definition. This connectivity allows you to process UHD 2160p60 content using a single BNC cable.
Smart front panel
One of the most innovative features of these devices is the smart front panel (optional) that includes a rotary knob, a color LCD screen and several buttons. Alternatively, a smart panel can be installed to replace the basic version and add configuration and control functions from the front. The LCD screen allows you to view the processed video signal, monitor audio intensity and even check the time code.
Additional advantages offered by the different Teranex Mini models include an integrated power supply and an Ethernet port that provides the possibility of remote control. On the other hand, said connection can be used to supply electrical current, so it is not necessary to connect them to an outlet.
The new range also features XLR connections for balanced analogue or digital (AES/EBU) audio signals and time code, as well as revolutionary electronics that offer a minimum noise floor of -115 dBFS. Likewise, it allows conversions to different formats with the renowned Teranex quality.
Unlike expensive card-based converters that cannot process 6G or 12G SDI signals, the different Teranex Mini models can be placed in racks using an optional tray. Thanks to the 12G SDI connections, the smart front panels and its mounting system, I consider that this line of converters turns out to be a more ideal solution for television channels that require installing devices in racks. Likewise, it should be noted that all of these models can be hidden in any corner, just like classic converters, with the additional advantage of having a superior aesthetic that allows them to be placed on desks, since all the cables are connected to the back.
There are 6 Teranex Mini models depending on the type of conversion required: SDI to HDMI, HDMI to SDI, SDI to Analog, Analog to SDI, SDI to Audio and Audio to SDI. Likewise, 6 models are offered for fiber optics that include an SDI connection and a module compatible with the SMPTE standard. These include Optical to HDMI, HDMI to Optical, Optical to Analog, Analog to Optical, Optical to Audio, and Audio to Optical versions.
