Advanced 8K monitoring with the new Teranex Mini SDI to DisplayPort 8K HDR
Blackmagic Design launches an advanced 8K monitoring solution compatible with the new Apple Pro Display XDR monitor for color references both on set and in post-production.
Blackmagic Design A new device will be launched next October Teranex Mini SDI to DisplayPort 8K HDR, a solution of advanced 8K monitoring with a DisplayPort connection, two on-screen indicators, HDR compatibility, monitor calibration and a 33-point 3D LUT that has been designed specifically for the film and television industry to benefit from the new generation of monitors such as the Pro Display XDR.
The Teranex Mini SDI to DisplayPort 8K HDR model is an advanced monitoring solution compatible with 8K definition, as well as computer displays and high-end monitors with a DisplayPort connection, such as the new Pro Display XDR. Unlike basic converters, the Teranex Mini SDI to DisplayPort 8K HDR device allows the use of calibrators from other manufacturers for the purpose of correctly adjusting connected monitors to achieve accurate color. Likewise, it offers the possibility of viewing two graphical representations simultaneously, such as the waveform, the chromatic components, the vectorscope or the histogram. This new converter is ideal for broadcasters and film studios that require professional and economical equipment to control the colorimetry of images. Plus, it features a sleek design with an LCD screen to monitor signal and modify settings.
The front panel includes controls, an output for monitoring image color, audio meters and signal format indicators. For its part, on the rear panel there is four 12G SDI connections for HD, UHD and 8K sources. It also has two DisplayPort connections for common computer screens or USB-C DisplayPort for monitors like the new Pro Display XDR. On the other hand, the integrated processor provides the assurance that the source format will conform to the native resolution of the connected DisplayPort monitor. It is even possible to transmit using the 2SI or Square Division method.
HDR projects
The Teranex Mini SDI to DisplayPort 8K HDR model offers everything you need to carry out projects in HDR format. Simply connect an HDR monitor with a DisplayPort connection to start monitoring high dynamic range images. PQ and HLG formats with static metadata in the virtual processor identifier (VPID) are processed according to the standards ST2108-1, ST2084 and ST425. El modelo Teranex Mini SDI to DisplayPort 8K HDR supports ST42 standard5, which defines two new bits in the VPID, in order to determine the transfer characteristics of the SDR, HLG or PQ formats. Additionally, the ST2108-1 standard defines how to send static and dynamic HDR metadata via an SDI output. It even supports the ST2082-10 standard for 12G SDI sources, and ST425 for 3G SDI signals, as well as the Rec. 709 and Rec. 2020 color spaces, and the DCI-P3 format.
This model allows you to see two signal indicators on the screen completely independently, with the purpose of being able to meet broadcast standards on important high-end jobsto. These are overlaid on the image, and it is possible to customize their position, size and opacity, or select from different options, such as waveform, to view the luminance levels in the received signal. On the other hand, the vectorscope displays color intensity at a 100% SDI reference level. In turn, RGB and YUV graphs are ideal for the chromatic correction process, and in order to verify that the levels are valid. Finally, the histogram represents the distribution of details in the light and dark areas of the image, as well as the loss of information in these areas.
The Teranex Mini SDI to DisplayPort 8K HDR model includes the same 33-point three-dimensional conversion tables that are used in the film industry. In addition, the possibility of adjusting it with a USB calibrator is provided. The device will analyze the characteristics of the screen and generate a conversion table, in order to correct the observed differences. Two separate 3D tables can also be loaded and selected from the front panel.
It is always difficult to know which monitor color is correct, since they all have small differences, even within the same model. Therefore, the Teranex Mini SDI to DisplayPort 8K HDR converter allows you to use third-party USB calibrators to automatically adjust display colors, and is Compatible with SpectraCal C6, X-Rite i1 Display Pro and Klein K10-A devices, which connect at the front. The converter then takes care of the rest and automatically generates test signals during the procedure.
All 12G SDI inputs have branch outputs to connect other equipment. Additionally, support for HD, UHD and 8K sources is provided, which is ideal for the film and broadcast industries. The device supports the following frame rates: 50, 59.94 and 60 f/s in 720p; 50i, 59.94i up to 60i at 1080i; 1080p; 1080PsF; and 23.98 at 60 f/s in 2160p. Likewise, it is compatible with DCI 2K and 4K formats from 23.98p to 60p, and 4320p 8K at 23.98, 24, 25, 29.97, and 50 up to 59.94. Furthermore, by converting between 2SI and Square Division (four quadrant) methods, you can view 8K sources on any monitor. The Teranex Mini SDI to DisplayPort 8K HDR model also facilitates the processing of 3G SDI level A and B signals, as well as SDI YUV and RGB SDI formats.
The front panel display allows for precise monitoring of images and audio, and a wide variety of settings for all available functions. You can activate the 3D LUTs using buttons 1 and 2, or start the calibration process by following the simple on-screen instructions. On the other hand, the possibility of viewing the VU meters and choosing the ballistics (VU or PPM) is provided. You can even select different types of indicators, along with their location and opacity, or change network settings.
The device can be installed in a rack using the optional shelf. This accessory features a metal design that holds the converter and allows it to be secured with screws before installing it into the rack. Likewise, the Teranex Mini SDI to DisplayPort 8K HDR model includes rubber feet that can adhere to the bottom, if you want to place it on a desk.
