'Marte (The Martian)': Ridley Scott returns with a great epic production
Shot at the Korda studios in Budapest and in the Namibian desert, Scott and the cinematographer, Dariusz Wolski, have chosen to shoot in 3D using Panavision and 3ality technologies with RED Dragon cameras and even small GoPros.
In the same week that NASA announces the existence of water on Mars (coincidences of life?), Ridley Scott premieres his new film in the US Marte (The Martian). The director once again enters science fiction after the successes of Alien (1979), Blade Runner (1982) o Prometheus (2012) and, on this occasion, he has counted on actor Matt Damon to “abandon him” on the red planet. Completing the cast are Jessica Chastain, Sebastian Stan, Kate Mara and Aksel Hennie.
The film was shot at the Korda studios in Budapest, one of the largest film complexes in Europe and fully prepared to shoot indoor scenes with natural and artificial lighting. In addition, its height of more than 30 meters has allowed the creation of wind tunnels to recreate Martian storms that, according to NASA, due to dust and low gravity, could reach 300 km. in height.
To recreate the Martian dust, the production team used tiny flakes of silica and quartz (vermiculite) that reflect light very well in front of the camera, creating a very special atmosphere. However, the problem of protecting the equipment from this “Martian dust” has been a constant throughout the shoot.
The film focuses on three main settings: NASA's monitoring center on Earth, the spacecraft, and the Martian surface.
In addition to the different sets at the Korda studios, the team filmed exteriors in the Namibian desert, whose erosion after 80 million years is reminiscent of the Martian surface.
Arthur Max has been at the helm of this ambitious production based on the novel The martian by Andy Weir. Max and Scott worked hand in hand with NASA personnel to recreate a hypothetical trip to Mars by 6 astronauts as faithfully as possible.
In shooting, Ridley Scott and the director of photography, Dariusz Wolski, have chosen to shoot in 3D using Panavision and 3adlity technologies with large format cameras (four RED Dragons with Optimo lenses from Angenieux filming in 5K) and even small GoPros.
