The RTVE Chair in the UPM incorporates Cellnex, Dolby and Sape, which make up their advisory committee
Among the audiovisual technologies that are promoted from the RTVE chair in the UPM are the ultra high definition (UHD), the HEVC coding format, the DVB-T2 transmission standard and the New Generation Audio NGA to achieve a complete UHD experience.
The RTVE Chair at the Polytechnic University of Madrid has incorporated companies Cellnex Telecom, Dolby and Sapec. In this way, the Chair reaffirms its commitment to the impulse of new technologies and with the stimulus of vocations among students. The involvement of these three entities also assumes that they constitute the Cátedra Advisory Committee in technological aspects.
Among the audiovisual technologies that are promoted from the RTVE chair in the UPM are the ultra high definition (UHD), the HEVC coding format, the DVB-T2 transmission standard and the New Generation Audio NGA to achieve a complete UHD experience.
Already in the act of creation of the chair in January 2015, both Enrique Alejo, Corporate General Director of RTVE, and Félix Pérez, director of the UPM Technical Technical Technical Technical School of Telecommunication Engineers, stressed that the Constitution Agreement contemplated the possible adhesion of other companies and entities in the future, so that the chair exerted a tractor effect on the audiovisual industry in Spain.
Cellnex Telecom, Dolby and Sape have participated in the activities of the chair since its inception. They were involved in the first UHD signal emissions on DVB-T2, using H.265, in May 2015. Subsequently, the use of High Dynamic Range (HDR) and Wider Color Gamut (WCG) in emissions in Seville was incorporated, on the occasion of the 4K Summit in November 2015. And this year the collaboration has allowed the live broadcast ‘Parsifal’ in satellite UHD to Kinepolis, and through DVB-T2 in Madrid and Barcelona.
For Professor José Manuel Menéndez, director of the Chair, “the adhesion of these companies so relevant demonstrates that the chair fulfills its objective of promoting new technologies, knowing the implications of their deployment, and giving the work done an international projection, given the marked global character that the sector has at the moment”.
Cellnex Telecom is one of the main independent operators of wireless and broadcast telecommunications infrastructure in Europe. It offers a TDT and radio coverage of 99% of the population from more than 3,000 issuing centers in the national territory. The operator is collaborating very actively in the chair both in the issuance tests on DVB-T2 and in the realization of efficiency and network capacity measures.
As for SAPEC, it is a Spanish company with a great international projection dedicated to the transport of video signal in professional environments. It has specialized in the development and manufacture of equipment coding equipment and decoders with MPEG: HEVC, AVC, MPEG2 technologies. It participates very actively in the chair in UHD signal coding tasks through the HEVC standard and its comparative assessment with other coding standards.
Finally, Dolby is contributing to the Dolby AC-4 Audio Coding Equipment and Technology Chair, multichannel processing with Dolby Atmos. The bet of this multinational against other proposals goes through the processing and transmission of UHD video signal with HDR and WCG through its Dolby Vision system.
