Fifty million European homes will receive SVOD services in 2020

SVOD grew by 56% in Europe from 2014 to 2015. The business is led by Netflix with a 52% share.

The European Broadcasting Union (EBU) has published a new research work entitled Market Insights: SVOD in Europe, which surveys subscription video on demand services in Europe.

According to the report, SVOD grew by no less than 56% from 2014 to 2015, and is expected to reach 50 million homes by 2020.

At this time, 11% of European homes have some type of subscription to SVOD services, a figure that is still very far from mature markets in this business such as the United States.

As for the players that lead the SVOD business in Europe, according to Market Insights: SVOD in Europe is led by Netflix with 52% of the European market share. The report highlights that Amazon is growing rapidly despite not being available yet in the entire territory. The study also notes that other European groups are entering the market, including Vivendi (CanalPlay), Sky Plc (Now TV) and ProSiebenSat.1 (Maxdome).

Finally, research indicates that the impact of SVOD on audiovisual consumption remains modest. For example, in the United Kingdom, SVOD viewing represents 4% of daily television consumption, with about 11 minutes on average per day.

Research shows that free ctach-up services, such as iPlayer on BBC or the RAI Replay service, remain the best way to access on-demand content. 97% of EBU members have a free catch-up service.
