72% of European homes will receive DVB-T2 signals in 2022

Dataxis predicts that while in 2017, 30% of homes received DTT with the DVB-T2 standard, this figure will increase to 72% by 2022.

According to a study by Dataxis The second generation digital television standard, DVB-T2, will experience a significant boom in Europe between now and 2022.

Although the freed-up spectrum may allow the transmission of UHD content or additional channels, for example, the need for these improvements remains questionable in several European countries.

In 2017, twelve countries still use hybrid networks coexisting with the first generation DVB-T standard and the more optimized DVB-T2. Dataxis predicts that this number will decrease to 8 in 2022, provided that national authorities do not choose to put it on standby as has been the case in Belgium or Sweden.

Dataxis predicts that while in 2017, 30% of homes received DTT with the DVB-T2 standard, this figure will increase to 72% by 2022.

This increase is mainly due to the planned change in several European countries, such as Italy and the migration forecast in Spain, which would mean that 25.8 million homes would receive DVB-T2 (that is, 57% of all homes with DVB-T).

The question remains whether the investments required by DVB-T2 will be worth it for the remaining countries, which managed to implement HDTV over DTT by making a switch from MPEG-2 to MPEG-4. In addition, growth will be mainly driven by free reception, which will remain the main way of receiving DTT in 91 percent of all DTT households.
