Pere Vila anticipates some of RTVE's projects regarding 4K
The director of Technology, Innovation and Systems of Spanish Radio and Television announces that the Corporation is studying a plan to migrate its main mobile production units to 4K.
Pere Vila, director of Technology, Innovation and Systems of Spanish Radio and Television, has taken advantage of the 4K Summit organized in Seville by Medina Media with Panorama Audiovisual as Main Media Partner, to publicize some details about the Corporation's position regarding Ultra High Definition.
Vila has reviewed some of the pioneering productions that TVE is carrying out in 4K, such as the recent documentaries about the Reina Sofía Museum or the Antequera Caves. However, he has admitted that although documentary or fiction production is very advanced from a technological point of view, live UHD production still presents important challenges.
On the other hand, he has announced that RTVE is already studying a plan to migrate its main mobile production units to 4K.
Vila has highlighted that while there is no spectrum to distribute 4K signals, pending the second digital dividend, HbbTv distribution services such as the Red Button are a magnificent opportunity to bring Ultra High Definition to the viewer.
Pere Vila has also announced that Spanish Television is going to acquire a new scanner in order to convert production from 35mm to 4K, which would allow in the short term to offer one film a week in 4K through the Red Button.
Technical challenge
The audiovisual sector, according to Pere Vila, is in full transformation. At this time, the fundamental challenge is how to bring 4K to homes (DTT, satellite or cable) and determine the appropriate compression formats. The confluence of the Internet and 4K at home will make the viewer experience even more fulfilling.
