Three out of every four mobile lines in Spain have broadband

In September 2016, mobile broadband lines reached 39.33 million. Fiber optic lines increased by 1.8 million compared to the previous year

The National Markets and Competition Commission (CNMC) has published the data referring to the telecommunications market for September 2016.

During that month, the fleet of mobile lines that offer voice services with mobile broadband accumulated a total of 39.33 million lines, which is 7.5% more than in the same month of 2015 and represents 77% of the total mobile lines in Spain (51.3 million). In September, 192,107 new lines were added.
84.5% of voice lines with mobile broadband were concentrated in the three main operators, Movistar, Orange (including Jazztel) and Vodafone (including Ono).

Fixed broadband

In September, the fixed broadband fleet increased by 101,084 lines to reach a total of 13.51 million lines, 4.1% more than in the same month of 2015 and a proportion of 29.1 lines per 100 inhabitants compared to 27.9 a year ago.

DSL lines decreased that month by 94,866. In this way, Movistar lost 59,274 and the rest of the operators 35,592. On the other hand, HFC lines increased by 31,161 lines. Finally, the total number of FTTH lines exceeded 4.4 million, after growing by 164,789 lines in September. 64% of the total FTTH lines correspond to Movistar, with a fleet of 2.8 million lines.

Compared to September of the previous year, the increase of 1.8 million FTTH lines stood out, compared to the loss of 1.5 million lines with DSL technology.

In September, all operators added new fixed broadband lines. Almost 95% of the total lines are concentrated in the three main operators, Movistar, Orange (including Jazztel) and Vodafone (including Ono).

Wholesale fixed broadband

The total number of indirect access lines increased by 8,492 units in the month of September and grew by 10.8% year-on-year. Since the end of 2014, it is the NEBA service that has grown month by month; Specifically, this month it added 22,270 new lines, while the rest of the indirect access services subtracted 13,778 lines.

Mobile telephony

The fleet of mobile lines gained 97,813 lines in September. The increase registered in postpaid of 147,339 offset the drop in prepaid, with 49,526 fewer lines. The month closed with a figure of 51.3 million mobile lines, which is 1.1% more than in September 2015.

Penetration was 110.5 lines per 100 inhabitants, 1.3 points higher than the value a year ago.

In September, the three main operators gained lines and represented 83.1% of the total market.

In September, 516,625 mobile numbers were ported, 3.7% compared to the previous year.
Orange (which includes Jazztel since August 2015) and the MVNOs recorded positive net portability balances. In contrast, Movistar, Vodafone (which includes Ono since July 2014) and Yoigo presented a negative balance.
