Antena 3 and Diagonal TV conclude the great adventure of filming 'La Catedral del Mar'

After four months of filming, the series now enters a complex post-production phase that will last a few more months. More than 150 actors, hundreds of professionals and almost 4,000 extras have participated in this blockbuster production.

The filming of The Cathedral of the Sea has come to an end. After four months of recording, which began last August, the ambitious Atresmedia series for Antena 3 prime time (produced by Diagonal TV, La Catedral del Mar A.I.E. and Televisió de Catalunya) puts an end to its filming to now begin a complex post-production phase that will last a few more weeks.

Sonia Martínez, director of Fiction at Atresmedia, has been very proud that “we have successfully carried out such an ambitious shoot, with such a demanding level of production and with such a large number of professionals involved. Starring Aitor Luna, Michelle Jenner, Silvia Abascal, Pablo Derqui, Ginés García Millán, José María Pou and Daniel Grao, The Cathedral of the Sea It is directed by the award-winning Jordi Frades. Rodolf Sirera has been responsible for the adaptation of the successful novel of the same name by Ildefonso Falcones, a work that has already been published in more than forty countries, being translated into more than fifteen languages. Antonio Onetti and Sergio Barrejón complete the team of scriptwriters.

An ambitious shoot

The filming figures for this Antena 3 series are absolutely dizzying for a national production. With a cast made up of more than one hundred and fifty actors from the best of the acting scene, this project has needed more than 3,500 extras in its 17 weeks in which it has recorded its 8 episodes.

Almost a hundred specialists, more than 130 riders and 21 branch riders, have passed through the filming. The series has featured 14 medieval chariots and more than 220 animals (177 horses, 177 mules and 26 dogs).

Jordi Frades, director of the series, has defined his time on this project as "a wonderful adventure. Sometimes it's hard, other times it's enriching." He states that it is "a pleasure to have been accompanied by such a good team and such impressive actors. Now I only wish that the public can enjoy it as we have done."

For her part, Sonia Martínez recognizes the effort and professionalism of all those who have participated and are participating in this ambitious project: "Only with an excellent team of professionals can quality fiction be achieved. For four months, the filming of The Cathedral of the Sea He has visited enclaves throughout Spain. Extremadura, Castilla-La Mancha, Castilla y León, Madrid, Aragón and Catalonia have been territories that have welcomed the entire team of a series in which 80% of the scenes have been filmed in outdoor locations, some of them very symbolic.

The series has filmed in the Plaza del Rey or the Santa María del Mar church, in Barcelona; the historic center of Cáceres, including the Santa María co-cathedral and the Plaza de San Mateo); different buildings and locations in Segovia, among which are the church of San Juan de los Caballeros or the cloister of the monastery of Santa María la Real de Nieva; the castles of Montalbán and Guadamur, in the province of Toledo; or the Parador Nacional de Cardona, in Barcelona or Sos del Rey Católico.

Once the recordings are finished, it is time to begin the post-production phase in which through laborious work with digital effects (by Twin Pines) everything that is necessary to see and that no longer exists will be reconstructed.

Marcelo Pacheco is in charge of art direction; Teo Delgado is the director of photography. For his part, Pepe Reyes has been in charge of the costume design and Federico Jusid, composer of the soundtrack of this series.
