The brave commitment of 'Psiconautas' to adult animation
Based on the novel of the same name by Alberto Vázquez and produced by Zircozine, Basque Films, Abrakam Estudio and La Competencia, it convinced the members of the Film Academy by awarding it the Goya for best animated feature.
Psychonauts. The forgotten children, an unusual film in Spanish animated cinema with a very well illustrated proposal, based on the novel of the same name by Alberto Vázquez and produced by Zircozine, Basque Films, Abrakam Estudio and La Competencia, convinced the members of the Film Academy by awarding it the Goya for best animated feature.
Pedro Ribera, in charge of directing this interesting project together with Alberto Vázquez, acknowledges to Panorama Audiovisual that “psychonauts It is a different film in Spanish production because it is animation for adults. For this reason, receiving a Goya excites us and reaffirms the idea that we have a creative space to explore within animation that, despite the complexity of this type of work, the fact that they are low-budget projects, the hard process of making them, and that in many cases they are supposed to have a short commercial journey, they come out ahead, thanks to people who trust them and great teamwork."
Dealing with the always difficult issue of converting a novel into cinematographic language, Ribera highlights the ease of transferring the graphic and narrative universe of Vázquez's original novel, on which the film is based: "the novel itself is very visual, very plastic, with a narrative approach that already evokes animation."
psychonauts It has already won 17 international awards, and has been nominated for Best European Film, competing with films that are currently in the Oscar race.
With an impeccable international journey, psychonauts It will also be released in France and the United States this year. The producers of the film trust that this Goya will allow them to generate new approaches and new projects within Spain.
The film is set on an island after a terrible ecological catastrophe in which Birdboy and Dinki lost their parents. There was a time when they were dating, but Birdboy now lives isolated in the forest, wasting away, and oblivious to the fact that Dinki has decided to undertake a risky journey in search of a better place. Birdboy will have to fight his inner demons if he wants to join Dinki in time to help her on her adventure and save himself.
