Launched in late 1991, Adobe opted, instead of a traditional video editing system made up of expensive hardware, for a solution based exclusively on software that could run on an affordable computer. With Adobe Premiere the user could place clips on the timeline, add effects, transitions and edit the soundtrack. It seems simple by today's standards, but it opened the door to anyone who wanted to develop visual storytelling.

In 2003 Adobe introduced Premiere Pro aimed at professional video editing, while its brother, Adobe Premiere Elements, targets the consumer market.

Currently, Premiere is part of the Adobe Creative Suite family, a set of graphic design, video editing and web development applications. In 2013, the latest version appeared, Adobe Premiere Pro CC with powerful tools for collaborative work.

Premiere Pro has come a long way since its introduction 25 years ago. Today, editors can easily work with any type of media, from videos shot on mobile phones to 8K, HDR and virtual reality, and export them to almost any platform. Bill Roberts, senior director of video product management at Adobe, highlighted that “a history of innovation has made Premiere Pro an industry leader, and the preferred choice for great filmmakers such as David Fincher, Joel and Ethan Coen, Tim Miller, David Lowery and independent filmmakers such as Kyle Patrick Alvarez, Jack Price and Jennifer Phang… Also of the new generation of creatives such as YouTubers RocketJump, Karen Kavett, Ryan Connolly, Devin Graham (aka Supertramp) and Gunnarolla, and creatives like Sarah Diestchy or Kayla Briet.”
