The Quirino Awards for Ibero-American animation are born
The first edition of these awards will take place in Tenerife (Spain) during the first half of 2018 and will be sponsored by Turismo de Tenerife.
This morning and within the special destined for the Canary Islands at the Annecy International Animation Festival Canary Islands: The Next Hotspot for Animation? One of the main developments awaiting the island of Tenerife for next year has been announced: the celebration of the first edition of the Quirino Awards for Ibero-American Animation.
The trophies have been named in honor of the creator of the first animated feature film in history. In 1917 Quirino Cristiani directed The Apostle, an Argentine production where 58,000 35 mm drawings were used in addition to several models representing public buildings and the streets of the city of Buenos Aires. His work was echoed even by the giant Disney, who traveled to Argentina in 1941 for the premiere of Fancy. This is why the Quirino Awards pay tribute to Ibero-American talent and creativity.
The main objectives of these awards are: to highlight the talent and the Ibero-American animation industry; generate ties and networks between both sides of the ocean; build an Ibero-American animation market where audiovisual works circulate; reward animation in all its formats, feature films, shorts, school pieces, series, online series, etc.; and generate an Ibero-American co-production forum in parallel to the awards.
The event will therefore bring together the flourishing Latin American industry together with that of Portugal, Andorra and Spain, creating a bridge between both continents and building a true twinning to develop together the great market that is Latin America.
