RED will enter the smartphone business with a phone with a holographic screen
The Californian company led by James Jannard is preparing the launch of a smartphone with a holographic screen and VR, AR and MR capabilities.
Yes twelve years ago RED burst into the market surprising everyone with its RED One, a digital cinematography camera that marked a before and after in the industry despite the disbelief of many at first, now it is ready to surprise in the smartphone market.
The Californian company led by James Jannard is preparing the launch of a smartphone with a holographic screen and capabilities for virtual reality (VR), augmented (AR) and mixed reality (MR).
Its proposal will be multi-view (4-view) compared to the 2-view of stereoscopic 3D. Its screen, unlike some of the proposals on the market such as Amazon 3D Fire or LG Optimus, will not be lenticular. In RED's opinion, lenticular screens drastically reduce resolution, cannot be deactivated for standard 2D content and also only works in one direction (usually in landscape), in addition to presenting some color crosstalk.
The new Hydrogen One, which will be released in early 2018, will operate under the Android operating system and will incorporate the proprietary H30 algorithm that converts stereo sound into expansive multidimensional audio. Think 5.1 in your headphones. The perfect match for holographic H4V or just listening to your favorite songs.
Furthermore, it will incorporate a new high-speed data bus to enable a large and ever-expanding modular component system, which will include future accessories for photographing high-quality images and still images as well as holographic images.
For professionals in the sector, it is worth noting that this smartphone will be able to work natively with RED cameras such as Scarlet, Epic or Weapon as a user interface and monitor.
The phone will ship with a USB-C cable and charger and will include an expandable Micro SD card slot. How could it be otherwise, integrated two cameras (with RED technology) capable of producing cinema quality images.
James Jannard has asked himself in his blog: "why do we think we can do something different in the mobile phone market? Because we are doing everything differently and we feel better. That's the only way to enter a market. That was the thinking behind Oakley. And that was the thinking when we launched the RED One. Same formula. Do something significantly better."
