The writer and filmmaker will receive the highest distinction granted by the Fine Arts Circle On November 2 from the president of the Circle, Juan Miguel Hernández León.

The writer and filmmaker, Gonzalo Suárez was born in Oviedo in 1934 and moved to Madrid with only two years, where he studied Philology and Letters. In 1958 he arrived in Barcelona, ​​where he practiced journalism with the pseudonym of Martin Girard. Despite its growing success, it leaves journalism and publishes its first books, which suppose a break with naturalism in vogue (Of present body and Thirteen times thirteen or Rocabruno hits Ditirambo..).

In 1966 he began in the direction with two short films and two years later, he directs his first feature film Ditirambo, stage in which Gonzalo is already distinguished by moving away from the usual currents. Then I would write and direct more than twenty films many of them awarded at national and international festivals.

In parallel to his cinema, he has been developing a prestigious literary work, initiated in 1963 until today. Julio Cortázar compared Gonzalo's work in Spain as Boris Vian in France. Since the 60s he has not ceased to publish novels such as The sad murderer, Ciudadano Sade, a novel biography of the libertine aristocrat of the eighteenth century, to which it followed I, them and the other, a particular tribute to the vaodevil.

In 2003, Suarez debuted as theater director with the work Arsenic please, a free adaptation of Arsenic for compassion, of Kesselring, which Capra became a classic in 1944.

Gonzalo Suárez is one of our most awarded creators, in 1988 he received the silver shell for the best director at the San Sebastián International Film Festival. In 1990, the Gold Medal of Merit in the Fine Arts and, a year later, the National Cinematography Award. He has been appointed Knight of the Arts and Letters of France and in October 2016, the Great Cross of the Order of Alfonso X the Wise was granted.
