The new modular, expandable and IP-based radio system, Type R from Calrec, uses standard network technology and combines it with configurable soft panels that can be adapted to the needs of each program or production.

Calrec Type-R

Calrec Audio will exhibit in NAB 2018 (C7408), Type R, are new modular radio system, scalable and IP-based which uses standard network technology and combines it with configurable soft panels that can be adapted to the operator's needs.

The system of Type R physical control consists of three panels: a fader, a “large soft panel” and a “small soft panel”. Each is compatible with COTS hardware and powered over Ethernet to keep wiring to a minimum.

This solution is based on a 2U single core with integrated I/O resources to get users up and running immediately. A single core can power up to three independent mixing environments, without sharing DSP resources. Whether used as standalone studio consoles, microphone processors or mixing, the ability to use multiple mixing engines combined with the flexibility of an AES67 compatible network provides enough flexibility to keep up with changing radio requirements.

The touch screen soft panels are designed with simple and colorful control elements and can be easily customized as multifunction panels and can be preconfigured according to the use that will be given to them in each program or production.

The Fader panels are small, sleek and simple, with six faders and immediate access to essential controls. Fader panels can be added or removed by simply plugging or unplugging an Ethernet cable, creating an easily expandable radio infrastructure and facilitating upgrades.

Henry Goodman, director of product management at Calrec Audio, commented: "Type R is a completely modern, customer-centric broadcast system that adapts to the needs of a station as its requirements evolve. It provides simple customization through established networks, open control protocols and surface customization. With a native IP backbone, Type R provides an infrastructure for future expansion. It ensures that radio broadcasters can not only keep pace with changing demands, but can also use their capabilities to engage their audiences with new and innovative programming.”

Finally, it should be noted that the specific diffusion control is clear and concise throughout the system. Buses, including creating mix-minus feeds, are quickly assigned, while EQ and dynamics control is clear and fast. It is a pure radio platform designed for a modern fast-paced environment.
