Canal+ France loses the rights to the French Ligue 1 in favor of Mediapro

The Ligue de Football Professionnel exceeds the forecasts for the auction of television rights, reaching 1,153.47 million euros.

Canal+, the French broadcaster that has broadcast the French soccer league since 1984, will lose the television rights to the first division of the championship starting in 2020.

The Professional Football League (LFP) has awarded a good part of the broadcasting rights between 2020 and 2024 to the group Mediapro.

It is noteworthy that French football is on the rise by virtue of the 60% increase compared to the 2016-2020 period in the amount of the new auction, which has reached 1,153.47 million. The LFP exceeded the forecasts for the auction of television rights that it had set at 1,000 million euros, compared to 762 in the 2016-2020 period.

Mediapro has managed to obtain three of the seven lots that the LFP put up for auction, while BeIn Sports, which currently had most of the rights, recovered one and Canal Plus, which historically had always had some, did not get any.

The group will broadcast a game on Friday night and another on Saturday at 5 p.m. Furthermore, for the first time and in order to reconcile schedules with the Asian market, it will also broadcast a meeting at 1 p.m. on Sunday. Mediapro has also been awarded the rights to a four-game carousel on Sundays at 3 p.m. in addition to the main event on Sunday nights.

BeIN, for its part, will broadcast, among others, a match on Saturdays in primetime and another on Sunday at 5 p.m. Finally, note that the platform Free has been awarded the rights to delayed digital retransmission.
