Arantxa Echevarría wins the Goya for Best New Director for 'Carmen y Lola', a story that breaks taboos

Arantxa Echevarría With his first feature film he has managed to gain the Goya for Best New Director for the movie Carmen and Lola, the love story between two young lesbian gypsies. Already in her speech when accepting the award, the director made a plea in favor of the rights of women and LGBT groups. In his speech he stated that "the maturity of a society is measured by the role that women occupy in it. So we have to think if Spain is mature enough."

Arantxa Echevarría tells it clearly: "I have made a film about gypsy and lesbian women and it has touched people's hearts and they are moved. And that is what I want, for people to be moved by seeing stories of different people who feel like everyone else."
The director assures that she did not expect the impact that the production has had or its dissemination. The road was not easy since the first obstacle was seeking financing. The next one, according to Echevarría, was the casting "since no girl dared to play the role. It was not easy to organize the filming either."
Echevarría had already been nominated for the Goya in 2012, although in that case in the short film category with Panchito which told the story of “a Colombian immigrant who has a precarious job as a courier and whose motorcycle stops working for the fourth time.” The director has also worked in advertising.
