Samsung's DCI-certified cinema screen is installed in 39 locations around the world to date, in seven cities in Europe and before the end of the year in 14 new cities around the world.

Samsung Onyx

Samsung Electronics has announced in CineEurope 2019 its latest news about the Samsung Onyx Cinema LED screen, the first DCI-certified cinema LED screen (Digital Cinemas Initiatives) of the world.

Seog-gi Kim, Executive Vice President of Visual Display Business at Samsung Electronics, said: "With the Onyx Cinema LED display, users will enjoy a unique viewing experience, with top-notch picture quality, improved contrast ratio, and deeper blacks. We are committed to providing viewers with more powerful content to immerse them in every scene."

Samsung has unveiled all four new locations to open in Europe, two in Spain, one in Ireland and one in Romania.

In Spain, two screens will be installed in different rooms of Odeon Multiplex, which were already the pioneers in adopting this technology for the Odeon Sambil cinemas in Madrid. The Odeon Multiplexes located in the Plaza de Armas in Seville will be the first to open in September with a 10-metre screen, followed by the Odeon Multiplexes in the San Vicente Shopping Centre in Alicante, with a 14-metre Onyx screen, the first screen of this size installed in Europe and which will open to the public in October. Both installations will be completed by Ingevideo and Film Equipment.

Luis Millán, CEO of Odeon Multicines, comments that "we are committed to offering the best experience to our audience, and Onyx is clearly a differentiator. We are excited to join forces with Samsung and to be an active part of this revolution in the world of cinema."
The first 10-metre screen in the UK and Ireland will also be installed during the third quarter of the year following an agreement reached with the historic cinema chain, Movies@. The chosen location will be the iconic Dundrum Movies@, the installation of which will be completed by Omnex.

Graham Spurling, Director of Joint Manager at Movies@, explains that "Movies@ has always been a pioneer in its field, committed to delivering only the best audiovisual technologies that enhance cinema," explained Graham Spurling, Director of Joint Manager at Movies@. "When I saw these displays working at Samsung's headquarters in Frankfurt, I was impressed by the image quality, so we are delighted to be working with Samsung and Omnex to deliver a radically innovative LED display experience for the Irish public."

On the other hand, in Eastern Europe, the first Onyx screen in Romania will open before the end of the year in Cinema One of the Coresi Shopping Center in Brasov, where a 5-meter Onyx screen will be installed with CinemaNext as an integrator of the project.

Onyx European Partners

Currently available in three variants (5 meters, 10 meters and 14 meters wide), the Samsung Onyx screen offers, according to the manufacturer, better visual quality, technical performance and reliability than current projectors. With 4K resolution, Onyx provides the visual power of LED image quality and image refinement of High Dynamic Range (HDR) on the big screen.

Samsung Onyx continues to strengthen its relationships with companies in the industry, with 15 to date.

Started by CinemaNext, the first European company to start in 2017, the agreements currently also include the following companies: 2AVI, ADDE, Cine Digital Service and Cinemeccanica (France), Cine Project and Kinoton Digital Solutions (Germany), Bell Producción and CineSonor (Italy), Unique Digital Nordic (Norway), Cenario Avançado (Portugal), Equipo de Cine, Ingevideo and Kelonik (Spain) and Omnex (UK).
