Animation professionals will be able to register for the 3rd Ibero-American Co-production and Business Forum before March 2.

Quirino Awards for Ibero-American Animation

Los Quirino Awards for Ibero-American Animation have successfully closed the call for its next edition, which for the third consecutive year will be held in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Spain. A total of 219 works from 17 countries They aspire to be finalists in nine categories in competition: feature film, series, short film, school short film, video game animation, commissioned work, sound design and original music, visual development and animation design.

10 feature films, 32 series, 80 short films, 37 school short films, 50 commissioned works and 10 video games have been submitted to the call. Together, the works add up to more than 40 hours of animation. 25% of registrations come from Spain, which heads the list of countries with the highest participation, followed by Argentina (19%), Brazil (18%), Mexico (12%) and Portugal (7%).

In addition, works have been received from Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Ecuador, Paraguay, Peru, Puerto Rico (which is participating for the first time in the Quirino Awards), Dominican Republic, Uruguay and Venezuela. Argentina has been the country that has grown the most since the last edition, presenting 38% more works than in the last call. Among the applications are also films co-produced by a dozen countries outside the region, among which France, Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom and China stand out.

Among all the nominated works, there will be six nominees per category, which will be announced the week of January 20. An international jury will choose three finalists in each category, who will be eligible for the recognitions that will be awarded at the ceremony that will take place on April 18 in Tenerife.

The finalist works in each category will be announced at Casa de América in Madrid the week of February 17. He jury It is made up of the Colombian Alfredo Marun (Disney Television Animation); the polish Anja Franczak (Human Ark); the Salvadoran Simon Vladimir Varela (Production Designer and Visual Development Artist for several studios, including Pixar, Disney, Warner, among others); the American Vera Verba (Sesame Workshop YouTube Channel) and the French Véronique Encrenaz (MIFA Annecy).

Professional meeting point

In parallel with the awards, the Quirinos intend to continue generating networks and promoting the circulation of works on both sides of the ocean. For this, a new edition of the Ibero-American Co-production and Business Forum, which will take place on April 18 and 19 in the same island town. The second edition brought together 300 professionals from 20 countries, who participated in more than 630 B2B meetings.

Participation in the Forum is open to professionals in the sector from Latin America, Portugal, Andorra and Spain, as well as distributors, channels, sales agents and potential co-producers from the rest of Europe and North America interested in Ibero-American animation. Registration for the Forum must be made through the Quirino website before February 20 (early bird) and March 2 (final deadline).

Since its first edition in 2018, the Quirino Awards have become a reference platform for the promotion of Ibero-American animation, participating in different activities such as the Ibero-American Animation League, an association conceived together with the Pixelatl Festival (Mexico) and Animation! Ventana Sur (Argentina) to internationally promote projects in the region. In the last edition of the Ventana Sur audiovisual market in Buenos Aires, La Liga gave the award to the series “Primeras” by Bernardita Ojeda, a Chilean project co-produced between Pájaro and Typpo Creative Lab that, thanks to this recognition, will be presented to professionals in the sector at the Quirino Co-production Forum and at the Pixelatl festival.

The Quirino Awards were also present at the second edition of APA LAB, Latin American Laboratory for the Development of short film projects and Animation series held in the province of Córdoba (Argentina). On this occasion, representatives of the awards presented two Quirino trophies to the great-grandson and great-great-grandson of Quirino Cristiani as well as to the “Quirino Cristiani” Animation Production Center in the municipality of Unquillo.
