'El Hoyo' receives the Goya for a perfect integration of physical and digital effects
With this Goya, the Academy values the increasingly frequent interaction between physical and digital effects.
Mario Campoy e Iñaki Madariaga have received the Goya for Best Special Effects for the hole, the futuristic dystopia directed by Ask Castle Distance that proposes a world by levels. In granting this award, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has valued the increasingly frequent interaction between physical and digital effects.
This is attested to by Mario Campoy who believes that "as the sector evolves, it is very rare for effects to work separately from others. Having a physical base helps to later create the digital effect and from the other side it also feels like a support, taking into account the possibilities that digital offers. It allows us to overcome the barrier that physical effects have, that, no matter how much you want, a puppet is a puppet or a piece of silicone is a piece of silicone."
Iñaki Madariaga had worked with the director of El hoyo on previous films and when he learned about the project, before a story board, he accepted it without hesitation. “Galder told me that they wanted to make a digital recreation of the stage they were going to set up to see if the camera shots could be effective and to see if the distances between the floors hid a lot or not from the people below, among other aspects.”
"From there," explain those responsible for the special effects, "the set began to be assembled, which was an entire pharaonic work with a height of thirteen meters with a forklift in the middle that raised and lowered the platform, which then had to be erased digitally. The visionary of all this was Basque Films and Galder because, surely another director, faced with obstacles, would have backed down."
Mario Campoy believes that "almost everything can be done when it comes to special effects and that the only limitations are the budget and time. Therefore, directors must be made aware of how far they can go, which is always beyond the possible since by giving the idea a few turns, the impossible is achieved. In the end it is passion and fun."
The hole competed in the Special Effects category with The infinite trench, While the war lasts y Losing the east. Minio Cariumy e Cainika Madaria Super López, which was the winning work in this category in the last 2019 edition, with a special effects team that had a woman at the helm for the first time.
