He DPP, the media industry business network, has published a new research report, Delivering the IP Future, which sheds light on the technologies that will allow the media and entertainment industry to offer a all-IP future for content distribution.

In last year's edition, Preparing for an IP Future, DPP members examined the business challenges of transitioning to full content delivery over IP, and one of the key challenges identified was expanding peak load. There are several new technologies that can help address the demand generated by larger-scale viewing, such as large live events, but the maturity and application of these technologies varies, and buzzwords abound, so it can be difficult to understand their true impact.

Delivering the IP Future, is the result of the expert contributions from thirteen companies members of the DPP, and provides in-depth technical insight into how the challenge of scale can be conquered and what technologies will enable success.

Technologies explored in the research include broadcast sobre 5G which could, in theory, replace or augment traditional over-the-air transmission; the multicast, which offers dramatic efficiency improvements over unicast when broadcasting the same content to many viewers; Peer to peer which aims to offload traffic from distribution networks by sharing content directly between viewers; he edge computing which promises exciting new capabilities for delivery optimization and personalization; and the content distribution networks They form a crucial part of today's distribution infrastructure, and continue to evolve and expand.

Rory McVicar, director of product management at Centurylink, comments: "Our customers around the world are delivering video in unprecedented volumes, and the exponential growth of IP video delivery is set to continue. We are delighted to partner with the DPP on this research, which brings together a range of industry voices to explore how we can all meet the challenges ahead, delivering the experience audiences expect as their viewing habits move online."

As content delivery increasingly moves online, content providers are moving their supply chains to the cloud. In the spring, an upcoming DPP report will explore the experience of those building this Next Generation Content Supply Chain.
