Alberto González Vergel, a genius in the golden years of television theater, dies

He directed more than 500 dramatic pieces for TVE in spaces such as 'First Row', 'Novela' or 'Estudio 1', among others, during the golden years of television theater in Spain.

The Television Academy academic, theater director and director Alberto González Vergel He has died at the age of 97 in Gijón. The one who was director of the Spanish Theater (between 1070 and 1975), directed more than 500 dramatic pieces for TVE in spaces such as Front Row, Novel o Study 1, among others, during the golden years of television theater in our country.

Alberto González Vergel left his testimony recorded in the documentary project Living Treasures of the Television Academy stating that “staging is a personal commitment to life.”

“I have always been a critical spirit, I have judged everything that I have not liked and I have blessed and praised what has interested me, both in theater and on television,” he added.

A student of Chemical Sciences, he dedicated himself to theater direction from his youth in his hometown, Alicante, and later in Murcia, as director of the Spanish University Theater. Resident in Madrid since 1949, González Vergel knew better than anyone how to bring theater to television.

He was a teacher at the Royal Higher School of Dramatic Art, at the Official School of Radio and Television and at the Faculty of Information Sciences of the Complutense University.
