First 5G Multicast experience with 4K content live and recorded from Barcelona
In order to test the capabilities of the broadcast/multicast over 5G networks This Tuesday, February 25, an experience is launched in which the Corporation participates RTVE, the operator Cellnex, and radio frequency solution providers Rohde & Schwarz y Spinner.
The trial will consist of the broadcast of a live 5G Broadcast signal provided by RTVE, highlighting an entirely new live mobile experience for smartphones, tablets and a range of SIM-free devices throughout central Barcelona.
5G Broadcast is one of the main pillars of the 5G ecosystem, offering network operators and broadcasters revolutionary opportunities in several new business areas, while unleashing data capacity to create high spectral efficiency and reduce costs. Using 5G Broadcast/Multicast, mobile network operators can deliver premium content to consumers on the go with high quality of service (QoS) and higher quality of experience (QoE).
En Barcelona, Rohde & Schwarz proporciona la End-to-end 5G Broadcast/Multicast solution, which fully complies with the 3GPP norms Rel.14/15. The demo is based on the 1.5 KW transmitter TMU9evo 5G Broadcast habilitado de Rohde & Schwarz, con su Broadcast Service and Control Center (BSCC1.0) playing the role of a core network. Additionally, a software-defined receiver (SDR), developed by the Braunschweig Technical University, is used to demonstrate 5G Broadcast reception.
The on-air signal will be broadcast on channel 56 with a bandwidth of 5MHz (750-755 MHz) from the Cellnex Tower facilities in Collserola.
Spinner, a global provider of filters for broadcast and mobile infrastructure, is participating in the proof of concept by providing a 5MHz filter based on 5G Broadcast for the transmitter.
The content transmitted through the Broadcast/Mutlicast over 5G trial includes both live and delayed 4K broadcasts. Live content includes the signal from Radio 5 and Canal 24H.
4K content is a promotional video that shows the high-quality image of the service. For network operators and content providers, this experience will demonstrate that a completely new range of business models are now possible to deliver content or data to a large number of consumers and without affecting the 5G mobile network.
"5G broadcasting is a promising technology that could provide many additional innovative services to citizens. Cellnex is always looking forward to exploring future solutions for its customers," he commented. James Pujol, Head of Regulation en Cellnex Telecom.
