The ICT and Content sector grows for the first time since 2010 and is close to 90,000 million
The ICT and Content Sector contributes 4.4% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) to the Spanish economy.
The new edition of Annual report of the ICT and Content sector, published by the Ministry of Industry, Energy and Tourism, through the National Observatory of Telecommunications and the Information Society (ONTSI), managed by the public entity Red.es, reveals a growth in 2014 of 1.9% in the turnover of this economic sector, which has translated into 89,894 million euros. This is the first year-on-year increase in turnover in the last five years.
The balance is also positive in terms of job creation, since jobs in the sector increased by 3.6% in 2014, reaching 427,348 people. The same happens with the number of companies, which totaled 30,797, with a growth of 3.6%. The investment made in 2014, however, decreased by 3.1%, reaching 13,880 million euros.
In this way, the ICT and Content Sector contributes a total of 42,779 million euros to the Spanish economy; that is, 4.4% of the country's Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
The ICT sector contributes 84.36%
The contribution made by companies in the ICT sector to the total turnover of 2014 stands out, since their activity represents 84.36%, with a turnover of 75,833 million euros (1.3% more than the previous year). The increase in employment, of 5.4%, is especially relevant, with a global number of jobs of 330,930.
The number of companies active in the ICT sector, for its part, was 21,372. It represents a notable increase of 5.5%. These companies made investments worth 11,217 million euros in 2014, 5% less than the previous year.
The ICT wholesale trade and computer activities sectors are the ones that contribute the most to the growth in turnover, with increases of 12.3% and 7.5%, respectively. On the contrary, the telecommunications sector decreased by 9.2%.
In 2014, the Content Sector has managed to reverse the negative trend in which it has been immersed in recent years. Its turnover has reached 14,061 million euros. It represents 5.2% more than the previous year and 15.64% of the total billing (ICT + Content).
The investment made by companies also increases considerably and stands at 2,662 million euros, 5.9% more. The increase registered in the Publications sector stands out, whose investments grew by 43.8%.
The number of companies is 9,425, 0.5% less than in 2013. Employment also decreases by 2%, leaving jobs at 96,418.
