The Goya 2021 will exceptionally allow online premieres to compete
The rules of the next edition are made more flexible to accommodate films that were scheduled to be released in theaters and have been forced to do so via streaming, as a result of the theater closures caused by COVID-19.
The Board of Directors of the Film Academy has agreed to make it more flexible, exceptionally and only for the next edition of the Goya Awards, the rule that establishes the mandatory release in commercial theaters and with a box office open to the public to qualify for the awards.
This is a measure that will exclusively affect the 35th edition of the Goya Awards and is temporary in nature, limited to the extraordinary period in which our country finds itself. As soon as movie theaters can reopen under safe conditions and exhibition is restored, the Academy will review the measure and may finalize it, maintaining the rule of release in commercial theaters to attend the awards.
The institution confirms its defense of the collective and unique experience that enjoying cinema in theaters means for the viewer. We trust in the strength that comes with the audience's encounter with the films.
