He number of net subscribers to SVOD services in smartphones will increase by 34 million between 2019 and 2025 until reaching 93 million, a smaller growth than that of gross subscriptions, according to a study by Digital Tv Research.

The average SVOD subscriber on smartphones will pay 1.83 gross SVOD subscriptions in 2025, compared to 1.45 in 2019. These figures are lower than those of fixed broadband homes. SVOD uptake on smartphones will be greatest in emerging markets, especially those with low fixed broadband penetration, where disposable income is limited.

Simon Murray, principal analyst at Digital TV Research, notes that “Subscribers to SVOD services on smartphones through mobile operators will reach 16.0% of the 582 million global SVOD subscribers in 2025, up from 14.6% of the 403 million in 2019. Our forecasts only cover subscriptions taken through a mobile operator, so they exclude direct SVOD subscriptions through a mobile app. These “Forecasts could easily more than double if direct mobile SVOD subscriptions were included.”
