IPTV reached 1,028 million subscribers in 2019

Satellite pay television fell by 6 million subscribers in 2019 while digital cable lost 1 million subscribers.

Digital TV Research estimates that the pay TV subscriptions increased by 16 million to reach 1,028 million in 2019 in 138 countries. Growth occurs in emerging markets.

Simon Murray, principal analyst at Digital TV Research, says that "IPTV is the pay TV winner. IPTV added 49 million subscribers in 2019 to take its total to 307 million. Satellite pay TV fell by 6 million subscribers in 2019. Digital cable TV lost 1 million subscribers, and analogue cable TV lost 25 million subscribers."

If analogue cable television is excluded, the growth of digital pay television is truly impressive: it skyrockets from 380 million subscribers in 2010 to 991 million at the end of 2019.
