Chulalongkorn University uses Blackmagic Design solutions to stream classes online

Thailand's largest higher education center uses ATEM 2 M/E Production Studio 4K and ATEM Mini Pro switchers, and DaVinci Resolve Studio software.

The Chulalongkorn University, the largest higher education center in Thailand, conducts webcasts with products from Blackmagic Design, among which the mixers stand out ATEM 2 M/E Production Studio 4K is the ATEM Mini Pro, and the program DaVinci Resolve Studio. Chulalongkorn University is an autonomous public educational institution located in Bangkok that also functions as a research center. It is one of the leading tertiary education establishments in Thailand and has more than 37,000 students and 443 academic programs. Recently, it was listed as one of the top 100 universities in the world, according to the QS ranking.

Due to the current global health crisis due to COVID-19, the university is teaching online courses and providing important information to students, in addition to broadcasting classes to 23 other Thai educational centers, as part of the country's Educational Technology Program.

Banphot Srouisri, director of the University's Department of Multimedia Information Services and Academic Resources, has supervised the development of a work dynamic with Blackmagic Design products and the creation of studies in other training centers.

"This crisis has affected the entire country, and as a result we have had to find a way to continue with classes that cannot be held in person. Blackmagic Design products have been instrumental in achieving this goal successfully. We have used the company's teams since 2005 and knew we could create an affordable and easy-to-use streaming system," he adds.

New work dynamic

The new workflow includes multi-camera classes, seminars, interactive educational sessions and even online esports lessons, and includes both live-streamed content from experts and teachers and content that can be accessed at any time.

The university's information services team employs a mezclador ATEM 2 M/E Production Studio 4K and one unit ATEM Camera Control to switch between the various signals coming from the cameras and graphics. The content is then streamed live to students and other educational institutions, or to the university's post-production center, for audio and image editing and editing. calibrations.

This work dynamic is also used to receive signals from other organizations that are part of the Educational Technology Program. For this purpose, matrices are used Smart Videohub, various devices Mini Converter, and recorders and monitors UltraStudio Mini.

"We generally use the ATEM 2 M/E mixer as the main device to control signals and transmit material in and out of the university. In particular, the function SuperSource “It allows you to quickly display signals received from outside via Skype and vMix Call or add participants to calls,” says Sroisri.

During post-production, the university uses the program DaVinci Resolve Studio and three DaVinci Resolve Mini Panel devices to edit and grade recorded material that is later downloaded through the system Microsoft Stream. In turn, members of the post-production team have obtained Blackmagic Design certification as official instructors and can therefore train other professionals in the use of the software developed by the company.

"Given the large amount of recorded material we must process each week, the efficiency of DaVinci Resolve Studio is essential. Meanwhile, the control panels have allowed editors to work very quickly," he adds.

Likewise, the university has been using mixers ATEM Mini and ATEM Mini Pro to teach classes and seminars online. Each classroom is equipped with one of these devices, thanks to which the teacher or presenter can switch between several sources. In turn, by connecting a tablet to the mixer via the USB-C port, they have the opportunity to select signals directly from their desktops.

“Blackmagic Design products allow us to work remotely and from our studios, as well as teach classes with experts from anywhere in Thailand,” continues Sroisri.
