“Last and first men” and “The painter and the thief”, winners of the 10th edition of Atlàntida Film Fest
The Filmin film festival closes its doors with more than 550,000 spectators, more than triple that of the previous edition and an absolute record for all editions.
The 10th edition of Atlantis Film Fest, the largest online film festival in Europe, has come to an end with a new audience record. More than 550,000 spectators have followed the contest through its two aspects: 8,500 spectators in Palma, the physical headquarters of the festival for the fifth consecutive year, and 542,000 through the online platform. In total 367% more than the last edition.
Atlàntida Film Fest has been one of the first festivals to be held after confinement due to the COVID-19 health crisis. Despite the capacity limit of 50%, in Palma 90% of the screenings reached their capacity, a figure that reflects, once again, the great success of the public achieved on the island.
The Critics' Prize has gone to Last and First Men, the posthumous work of the Icelandic composer Jóhann Jóhannsson.
The ACCEC Critics Jury, made up of Mariana Freijomil, Abraham Domínguez and Raquel Abad highlights "the originality and simplicity of the proposal, full of strength and symbolism thanks to a hypnotic staging where image and sound merge to transport the viewer to a future where the human race contemplates and narrates its own extinction. In this film the monuments of the former Yugoslavia, a symbol of unity after the atrocities of the Second World War, galvanize the threat of a future whose echo touches our present.
“It is a cinematographic experience that is far from the usual, immersive and shows us that science fiction cinema has the power to imagine other worlds to evoke our own.”
Last and First Men is the Icelandic composer's posthumous film and his debut in film direction. The film is an essay that was born from the science fiction novel of the same name by the British Olaf Stapledon written in 1930. Jóhann Jóhannsson is the author of soundtracks such as The arrival y Prisoners, by Denis Villeneuve o The theory of everything, by James Marsh, for which he won the Golden Globe for Best Score.
The Audience Award, which is obtained from the average of user ratings of all the films at the festival, went to the Norwegian documentary film, The painter and the thief, by Benjamin Ree.
The theft of paintings by Czech naturalist painter Barbora Kysilkova from an art gallery in Oslo gives rise to an extraordinary story about human connection and friendship. An incredible story, but above all, real, starring one of the thieves whom the artist herself asks to portray and the consequent romantic relationship that both live over the years.
