The Community of Madrid promotes an Audiovisual Literacy Plan in collaboration with the ECAM

This is a pioneering project, aimed at schools and institutes in the 179 municipalities of the Community, which aims to bring children and young people closer to language and audiovisual narrative.

The Community of Madrid promotes audiovisual and cinematographic education through Audiovisual Literacy Plan, in collaboration with the ECAM, School of Cinematography and Audiovisual. An initiative that will reach more than 28,000 students from the 179 municipalities of the region, which starts this fall of 2020 and will run for four years, with a total of 716 workshops.

Marta Rivera de la Cruz, Minister of Culture and Tourism of the Community of Madrid, comments that "creating an audiovisual piece is not only an incomparable creative and cultural activity, but it enhances the learning capacity of our children and young people. Furthermore, the fact that this year the workshops are held online due to the socio-health environment that we are experiencing, is something that reinforces the importance of knowing and correctly interpreting the audiovisual language, with all the advantages and values ​​that it brings to the entire population."

The Audiovisual Literacy Plan is a unprecedented and pioneering project in Spain, both for its objectives and for the importance and scope in the number of municipalities and target audience it will reach.

It has free workshops for schools and institutes, with the aim of bringing language and audiovisual narrative closer to the youngest. In these activities, both students and teachers will be able to discover the different audiovisual professions, the importance of teamwork, the elements that make up an audiovisual work or the meaning and narrative of cinematographic language, always from a practical and interactive point of view.

The Audiovisual Literacy Plan is part of the commitment to the industry by the Community of Madrid, which has also materialized in various projects such as the expansion of aid and calls, or initiatives such as the metro campaign One meter from your cinema or Next Lab, a platform that brings technology into contact with animation, VFX or video games.

In each of the Madrid locations, four weekly workshops will be held aimed at primary, secondary and high school groups aged between 10 and 17 years. Due to the circumstances arising from the COVID-19 crisis, the workshops have been adapted to the online format, so that students can carry them out in their own classrooms - as part of their subject programming - or as a complementary activity during school hours.

The secondary and high school workshops are structured through the Audiovisual Language and Narrative Teaching Guide developed by Fernando Franco and published by ECAM on its website and cover the main narrative elements of cinema with the help of professionals. For primary school students, the workshop will teach them how to make a film through the History of Cinema and the different pioneering devices in the moving image.
