The 1237 Smart Active Monitors occupy pride of place in the iconic Studio C of The Audio Guys (TAG) Institute training center.

DAY Mumbai

Located in the busy Andheri West studio area of Mumbai, The Audio Guys Institute (TAG) are using monitors Genelec for the training of the next generation of audio professionals, with the 1237 Smart Active Monitors occupying a privileged place in the emblematic Studio C.

TAG is a long-term dream of the founders Jayakrishnan Nalinkumar, Anupam Sathe and Omkar Tamhan. “I have known TAG partners for a long time, so when they were planning their installation, they called me to discuss possible monitoring solutions and other equipment,” he recalls. Shiv Sood, from Sound Team, Genelec distributor in India. "They were looking for a pair of main monitors that could be flush-mounted, but due to the room size restriction they were looking for something small but powerful. The Genelec 1237s were the best fit considering they are known for being rock solid and performing well on the low end."

The decision to choose Genelec for Study C was an easy one for the TAG team. “All of the founding partners have been using Genelec systems in their respective studios and homes for a long time,” reveals Sood. “They were very confident in going with Genelec systems when they decided to build their large stereo control room, due to their familiarity with the sound they produce.”

Calibration with GLM

Another advantage of choosing 1237 monitors is the GLM calibration software from Genelec. "GLM has been a great help in its configuration. The rooms, despite being very well built, had small acoustic problems," explains Sood. “GLM has helped flatten some problematic frequencies to achieve a nearly flat response.”

Equally important has been the way the software has been used to improve the workspace of engineers. “They invested in the first SSL Origin console that came to India for Studio C,” explains Sood. "Having a large format analog table is great for TAG, but it also comes with some challenges. GLM's multi-point calibration turned out to be really useful, as it was able to extend the sweet spot across the entire table."

The challenges of launching just before India entered its first COVID lockdown have meant that TAG has had to innovate to overcome a difficult period. However, as they wait to welcome the first students through their doors, the decision to use Genelec monitors for the flagship space is one the founders are clearly happy with.

“We have been in constant contact with the TAG team and they are very happy with the pair of 1237 monitors in the room,” Sood said. “After we finished the final round of calibrations, the founders specifically commented on the 1237's great, tight bass response and the high SPL it packs into such a small form factor,” concludes Sood.
