Telefónica's 5G already reaches 80% of the Spanish population

80% of the Spanish population can now take advantage of the advantages of 5G. Telefónica ends the first quarter of 2021 with the installation of 4,300 nodes that provide coverage to 37 million inhabitants.

In this way, the operator advances its deployment plans in Spain and the commitment it adopted Telefónica with the digitization of the country within the digital pact, as highlighted by its president José María Álvarez-Pallete: "The launch of our 5G network last September was a leap forward towards hyperconnectivity, which will change the future of Spain. We continue to execute our strategic plan in this year 2021 after a challenging 2020 in which Telefónica has made progress to promote the population's access to 5G. In Spain our commitment has always been to contribute decisively to the digitalization of the country. In fact, Spain today leads the digital infrastructures in Europe with the most extensive network of fiber optics and we will continue to do so with the deployment of 5G.”

A 5G NSA deployment

Telefónica is working with the latest generations of radio that allow the dual use of 4G and 5G with the aim of bringing the new technology to the maximum population from the first moment. Thus, currently Telefónica's 5G network combines the deployment 5G NSA (Non Stand Alone) y DSS (Dynamic Spectrum Sharing) to immediately deploy the network 5G SA (Stand Alone), when the technology is fully available after standardization.

Por otro lado, se están utilizando las bandas de 3,5 Ghz, única banda 5G ya licenciada a los operadores, y las bandas medias (1800–2100 MHz), donde actualmente está el 4G aprovechando la posibilidad de usar equipo NR (New Radio) que puede funcionar en ambas tecnologías, 4G y 5G a la vez. A lo largo del 2021, previsiblemente, se incorporará la banda de 700 Mhz., cuando salga y se resuelva la subasta.

Proyectos de innovación

Telefónica has developed 13 casos de uso con clientes reales desde el lanzamiento comercial de su 5G el pasado mes de septiembre y que se suman a los más de 60 que la operadora ha impulsado en los últimos tres años desde que lanzó en 2018 el proyecto Ciudades Tecnológicas 5G. Esta iniciativa, pionera en España, está orientada a impulsar la implantación del 5G compatibilizando los desarrollos técnicos con la aplicación de la nueva tecnología en casos de uso con clientes reales.

At the same time, Telefónica ha encauzado su actividad tanto con pilotos de innovación propios como con proyectos impulsados gracias a las ayudas del Ministry of Economic Affairs and Digital Transformation through Red.es or the Nodo de Colaboración 5G con la Xunta de Galicia.
