53% of the population accesses the Internet while watching television
According to an AIMC study, 20% of homes have a television connected to the Internet. Social networks, with 74%, are the preferred space to comment on television programs.
AIMC (Association for Media Research) has presented the results of its latest study carried out through the AIMC Q Panel, its own panel of Internet users, which shows the habits of Internet users in relation to television consumption. In this new edition, emphasis has been placed on the relationships between the use of social networks and television.
From this study it is clear that 65% of Internet users have consumed the Internet at some point while watching television. Within this group, 42% say they do it frequently and 58% occasionally.
The mobile phone is the main device for commenting on TV programs on the Internet. 17% of Internet users report having seen or made comments on the Internet while watching television in the last 30 days. The device most used to carry them out is the mobile phone, with 66% of users, followed by the laptop or desktop computer (20%) and the tablet (14%).
On the other hand, social networks, the preferred space to comment on what is seen on TV. Comments on television over the Internet are made by 74% of those surveyed on social networks and 37% through instant messaging. By age ranges, social networks are the most used means by all age groups, except for those over 54 years of age who prefer the program's website or television channel.
What types of programs are those that Internet users comment on the most? In first place come movies, mentioned by 41% of those who make or watch comments, followed by sports broadcasts, foreign fiction series and news/information programs, with a three-way tie at 37%. Among men, movies are the ones they most often comment on on the Internet, while women like to talk about reality shows more.
Access from laptop
53% of Internet users declare that they have accessed some television content through the Internet in the last 30 days. The preferred device to access these television contents through the Internet is the laptop, being chosen by 46% of Internet users who access television content on the Internet, followed by the desktop computer (34%) and the Tablet (24%). The smartphone is in fifth position with 26%.

The AIMC Q Panel is based on online measurement, an effective system for conducting interviews in an agile way, but it still does not have the precision and reliability of the EGM, whose results are based on a much larger sample. With this new study, we hope to better understand the behaviors of the Internet population, which represents around 29.6 million of the 39.7 million Spaniards aged 14 or over.
