Sign Language Film Library

The CNSE Foundation for the Removal of Communication Barriers y Spanish Film Archive have signed an agreement to collaborate on activities that facilitate accessibility of film collections for deaf people.

Specifically, the agreement reached includes the translation into sign language of 58 pieces belonging to the collection The War filmed, a compilation of documentaries and newsreels filmed and edited during the Civil War that, grouped into 8 programs, represent exceptional testimonies of the time. The War filmed It was a co-production between Filmoteca Española and RTVE made and broadcast in 2006 and subsequently released in DVD format.

The materials range from documentaries on Durruti's burial or the first session of Cortes held in Valencia after the displacement of the Government of the Republic to Valencia, to the entry of the rebel troops into Madrid or reports on the treatment given to prisoners of war on both sides. Each program also includes an introduction by historian Julián Casanova.

The initiative not only improves the accessibility of the audiovisual heritage preserved in the Filmoteca, but has also meant, on the other hand, an important source of employment for deaf people, while deaf professionals have been in charge of carrying out the translation.

The signing of the pieces has been possible thanks to the convergence of BBVA with the CNSE Foundation.
All the material is now permanently available on the channel The signed filmed war of Vimeo from Spanish Film Archive.
