Josetxo Cerdán, new director of the Spanish Film Archive

Cerdán replaces the previous director, Ana Gallego, who left the position in June to join the team at the Ministry of Justice.

Josetxo CerdánJosetxo Cerdán Los Arcos (Tudela, Navarra, 1968) will be named director of the Spanish Film Library in the coming days and will join the institution in September.

Cerdán is Professor of Audiovisual Communication at the Carlos III University of Madrid and member of the TECMERIN research group. Doctor from the Autonomous University of Barcelona with a thesis directed by Roman Gubern on the arrival of sound cinema to Spain, he was also coordinator of the Master in Theory and Practice of Creative Documentary at the UAB. He has been artistic director of the Punto de Vista Festival (Pamplona) and programmer at the Flaherty Seminar (New York, 2012), the Locarno Festival, the Anthology Film Archive and the Lincoln Center. He has curated, among others, the program 'D-generation: underground experiences of Spanish non-fiction' (Las Palmas International Film Festival/Instituto Cervantes, 2007-2009).

Josetxo Cerdán has published numerous cinematographic studies, specializing in Spanish documentary and experimental cinema, transnational cinema, digital cinema and media history. Among them stand out Look, memory and fascination. Notes on the Spanish documentary (Ocho y Medio and Malaga Spanish Film Festival, 2001), co-edited with Josep Maria Cátala and Casimiro Torreiro; Documentary and Avant-garde (Málaga Spanish Film Chair and Festival, 2005), also in collaboration with Casimiro Torreiro; either On the other side of fiction. Thirteen contemporary Spanish documentary filmmakers (Málaga Spanish Film Chair and Festival, 2007). He is also co-editor, along with José Luis Castro de Paz, of Suevia Films-Cesáreo González. Thirty years of Spanish cinema (CGAI, 2005), book awarded by the Spanish Association of Film Historians (AEHC).

Collaborator and coordinator of different academic journals, he has also been part of the team of several feature-length documentaries.
