Coinciding with the launch of its new studios in the Axel Springer building in the center of Berlin, the news channel Welt has adopted a flexible IP-based workflow with an intercom system based on the Eclipse HX digital matrix from Clear-Com, the FreeSpeak II wireless system and V-Series Iris panels.

Clear-Com's local partner, MCI, has been in charge of designing and supplying the equipment for the new studio. The planning process for the new study began three years ago with the goal of maximize flexibility to adapt to the ever-changing requirements of the broadcast sector.
Welt offers at least 14 hours a day of live coverage of breaking news from around the world, making your timely response to any news situation of utmost importance.

To ensure seamless communications across the studio's complex functions, an Eclipse Median rack with integrated FreeSpeak II and V-Series Iris panels now equip the 175 m² space.

Martin Koops, chief project engineer at MCI, explains that "with the broadcast industry trending towards AoIP, it was very important that the new studio be equipped for AES67 workflows. The studio's Clear-Com Eclipse Median framework can scale up to 448 ports, is equipped with Dante ports, AES67 ports and can connect to other devices over IP."

IP connectivity

The FreeSpeak II wireless system is connected to Eclipse via E-IPA cards, and V-Series Iris user panels with integrated IP connectivity to Eclipse are positioned around the studio.

With Eclipse HX management software, Dynam-EC, the broadcaster can track their intercom routing and role assignment live, providing the agility needed for a news broadcaster to report in real time.

Dynam-EC can be used to manage N-1s, IFBs for cueing or switching SIP ports online in real time. The SIP management is an important aspect of Dynam-EC's capabilities, with the ability to dial and configure trunk lines via SIP ports and dynamically switch them to Clear-Com Iris panels based on production requirements.

“The news channel's IP communications system aligns with its goals of having a modern, state-of-the-art facility that can be flexible and agile, to be able to quickly adapt to the next news story,” concludes Koops.
