Television revenues stabilized in 2021
The year 2021 closed with income from audiovisual services very similar to that of 2020. Both income from free-to-air and pay television remained stable. As for radio, it fell by 3%.
In the fourth quarter of 2021, total revenue from television and radio services totaled 1,097.8 million. This is highlighted by the National Markets and Competition Commission on its portal CNMCData.
If you look at advertising revenue, the two main television groups, Mediaset and Atresmedia, jointly represented the 82.3% of advertising revenue on television. This percentage was 87.8% if only the free-to-air television segment is taken into account.
In the fourth quarter, the number of subscribers to pay TV and VoD platforms remained at 8.3 million, registering a decrease of 41 thousand subscribers compared to the previous quarter and an increase of 0.8% compared to the fourth quarter of the previous year.
The technology with the most users was IPTV (offered over fiber and xDSL networks) with almost 5 million subscribers.
Consumption
Average television consumption during the fourth quarter was at 3 hours and 10 minutes per person per day. These data reflect an increase of 23 minutes per viewer/day compared to the previous quarter (summer months) and 32 minutes less compared to the same period of the previous year (period in which there were still restrictions related to the pandemic).
Television consumption TDT continued below 75% (74.3%), compared to the increase in over-the-air TV services cable y IPTV (24.6%). This redistribution is related to an increase in pay television subscriptions through fiber networks.
The most watched channels were Telecinco, Antena 3 and La 1, with an audience of 13.9% for the first two and 9.1% for the third.
By groups, Atresmedia and Mediaset were the leaders, with 27.6 and 27.5 audience share points in the quarter, respectively.
