Cisco - Technology Trends 2023

Liz Centoni, chief strategy officer and general manager of applications at Cisco, anticipates 5 trends in the IT world (applicable to new broadcast environments) that will define 2023.

Centoni, first of all, considers key how networks will become predictive, focusing more on the user experience and applications, with better capabilities to predict problems and offer resolution options. Companies will be able to access these predictive technologies through “integrated and simple” SaaS offers, which will be an “important” step towards self-healing networks of the future, capable of learning, predicting and planning by feeding on countless telemetry sources.

The second of the issues that the Cisco executive cites is the realignment of multicloud environments. Although nine out of ten organizations (89%) are adopting a multi-cloud strategy, their greatest complexity when connecting, protecting and visualizing will drive the evolution towards new framework environments such as sovereign clouds, local zone clouds, zero carbon clouds and other innovative offerings. This trend will create more private and peripheral cloud applications and services, and a new multicloud operating model.

Another pillar for Centoni will be the imminent initiatives of the industry, governments and academia will outline a common regulation for govern Artificial Intelligence (AI) in an ethical and responsible manner, based on the principles of transparency, impartiality, responsibility, privacy, security and reliability. As AI is used to make relevant decisions (such as hiring employees or approving loans), this framework will be applied to data modeling and training.

Net Zero y Malware

The Cisco team also considers the evolution of companies towards the Net Zero. According to Centoni, in 2023 they will be adopted Standards to Meet Sustainability Goals with Advances in Power Over Ethernet Design and Hardware (PoE). Cloud networks and APIs will optimize the management of data center and office platforms to monitor and optimize energy use. Companies and logistics providers will increasingly use IoT to provide complete visibility to their supply chains, while IT providers will be more transparent about recycling, repair and reuse of equipment (circularity).

Finally, the fifth protagonist of the trends listed by Liz Centoni has at malware as protagonist. With the rapid maturation of hacker 'toolkits' that include modular malware, in 2023 "we will overcome the era of simple cyber threats," emphasizes the Cisco head. It will not be enough to detect the malicious code, and the attacks will be more directed at people instead of systems. Cybersecurity will evolve to detect anomalies and behavioral patterns, avoiding “gaps” through AI and machine learning.

Beyond the trends listed, Centoni reflects on how Companies must address this renewed playing field: "In 2023 we foresee an evolution in the way applications, connectivity and security are delivered and consumed; a sustainable immersive future by default, requiring new technologies built with new processes and serving new business models; and exceptional and reliable digital experiences as a key to business success."
