He International Olympic Committee (IOC) has awarded the audiovisual rights in Europe for the four Olympic Games for the period 2026-2032 to the European Broadcasting Union (EBU-EBU) y Warner Bros. Discovery.
After the call of a public tender by the COI, the UER y Warner Bros. Discovery submitted a joint offer to acquire all rights in 49 territories in Europe for the XXV Winter Olympic Games Milan Curtain 2026, the Games of the XXXIV Olympiad Los Angeles 2028, the XXVI 2030 Winter Olympics and the Games of the XXXV Olimpiada Brisbane 2032, as well as for the Youth Olympic Games that take place in said period. Finally, this proposal has been the most attractive for the International Olympic Committee.
This new agreement guarantees the free broadcast of the Games through the EBU public service broadcasting network, the vast majority of which continued Olympic Games coverage over the past three Games in association with the IOC and Warner Bros. Discovery. Each member of the UER will rebroadcast more than 200 hours of Summer Olympics and at least 100 hours of the Winter Olympics on television, with a wide radio coverage, live broadcasts y reports through web platforms, applications and social networks.
Thomas Bach, president of the IOC, welcomes this long-term agreement “with two of the world's leading media companies.” "The EBU and its members bring unparalleled broadcasting expertise and reach across Europe, and Warner Bros. Discovery, through the recent combination of Warner Media and Discovery, represents one of the world's largest media and entertainment companies across all genres and programming platforms. This demonstrates the continued appeal of the Olympic Games across Europe. With the IOC redistributing 90% of the revenue it generates, this long-term agreement also provides critical financial stability to the sports movement. in general and, ultimately, supports the athletes themselves,” he points out.
On the other hand, Delphine Ernotte Cunci, president of the UER and CEO of France Télévisions, states that the organization is “proud” to “have managed to ensure that the audience enjoys the Olympic Games free-to-air until 2032. This agreement changes the rules of the game for public service media and demonstrates the permanent strength and solidarity of our Union.”
Finally, for Warner Bros. Discovery, today's announcement expands its position as “Home of the Olympic Games in Europe” and follows record viewership and digital audience growth over the last three Olympic Games, with the Paris 2024 Olympic Games in sight. Under the new agreement, it will remain the only place that will present “every moment” of the Games in its digital and streaming platforms, and will have all pay television rights, including channels owned and operated by Eurosport.
