The world of short films unites with the “The short is cinema” campaign for the Goya 2023
The Short Film Industry Association (AIC), the Platform for New Directors (PNR) and the Spanish Short Film Coordinator promote the campaign “Put on the badge: The short is cinema”, which aims to revive the conversation about the state of the short film industry within the framework of the Goya Awards 2023.
With this simple gesture, the different short film associations They seek the support and unity of the sector for the creation of a official body that centralizes and coordinates all matters of the short film, as well as the annual investment of televisions and platforms of at least 1% allocated to the purchase of rights to short films on the project. These badges can be obtained in the different hotels associated, as well as at the entrances to the venue, before attending the Goya Awards, and attendees are encouraged to wear them during the gala celebration in Seville.
The claim, promoted by AIC, PNR and the Coordinator of Spanish Short Films, focuses on the scarce “promotion and financing” of the genre, making it essential to “make visible” its importance and “highlight that it is not small cinema nor is it less important.” The creation of a specific body will allow Spain, according to the three organizations, to “compete on equal terms with the countries around us" by promoting new avenues of exhibition, in addition to an organization for a "totally necessary" foreign promotion. In parallel, the demand of the 1% alludes to the necessary "commitment" of the industry to thus "invest in emerging talent and in a format always ready for new perspectives and narrative."
In recent years, the talent of filmmakers who make short films and the quality of their work has acquired a important international dimension. Among the milestones achieved, the nine Spanish short films nominated for the Oscars stand out, such as The windshield wiper by Alberto Mielgo, who managed to win the Oscar for Best Animated Short Film last year; and the Palme d'Or at Cannes for best short film for Timecode by Juanjo Giménez Peña, being the only Spanish triumph in the 74 editions of the Cannes festival, together with Luis Buñuel in 1961.
The different short film associations, through the Spanish Short Film Coordinator, are collecting signatures to achieve these two objectives here.
