Catalan reaches VOD platforms thanks to CCMA and Generalitat

The Department of Culture of the Generalitat and the Catalan Corporation for Audiovisual Media (CCMA) have presented an agreement that will provide Catalan to hundreds of titles on platforms such as HBO Max, Netflix o Prime Video.

The Minister of Culture, Natalia Garriga Ibáñez, and the president of the CCMA, Rosa Romà i Monfà, have presented this agreement on which both organizations have worked for months. Thanks to this agreement, the CCMA will put “thousands” of titles dubbed and subtitled by TV3 available to Culture, which in turn will analyze the catalog from each of the main video on demand platforms, and will send the corresponding dubbing and subtitles to each company for publication.

In this sense, Romà has highlighted “the fundamental role of platforms in audiovisual consumption and the generosity of the CCMA to guarantee universal access to content in the Catalan language, with a measure that allows for second life for CCMA dubbing, which is reaffirmed as a great space that promotes the Catalan language in the audiovisual world.”

Thanks to this advance, from that moment on, citizens will find hundreds of films and series in Catalan on their platforms. For Garriga, this work “was urgent” and will allow the user, “every time they choose which movie or series they want to watch, to look to see if it has the option in Catalan.”

Content in Catalan on VOD platforms

The CCMA and the Generalitat has confirmed that HBO Max will incorporate more than a hundred films in Catalan in the coming months. Until now, this platform only had a dozen productions in this language, but as a result of this agreement, 43 films have been incorporated, among which titles such as The Great Gatsby, Gravity, The suicide squad, 300, The dark knight o Justice League, among others.

This novelty is added to the government's agreement with Netflix, signed in March 2022, for which this platform has dubbed and subtitled 127 titles in Catalan. To this selection, those from the CCMA that match their catalog will be added. For this reason, in the coming weeks they will have around thirty titles in Catalan, among which you can already see Daggers in the back, 1917, Green Book, Captain Fantastic, Salt, hearts of steel, Karate Kkid and more.

The Department of Culture also works with other platforms such as Amazon Prime Video, which is already dubbing films and series into Catalan such as Jack Ryan, The Boys o The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power; Movistar Plus+, which subtitles a good part of its catalogue; of the movie, which is dubbing series in Catalan for the first time, and other companies.
