Andrés Gil and Jaume Martí, best editing, 38 Goya Awards

Andrés Gil and Jaume Martí close a 20-month journey working on the montage of 'The Snow Society' with the recognition of the Academia in the form of a Goya, the second in Martí's career after 'A monster comes to see me'.

More than 600 hours of filming They had to find a place in the assembly of The Snow Society, a project that summarizes in 144 minutes an odyssey of several months materialized in the form of captivating plans, cuts that involve dramatic time ellipses and a rhythm that manages to involve the viewer in the harrowing experience lived in the Ante more than 50 years ago.

Andrés Gil and Jaume Martí, best editing 38th Goya AwardsTackling this project has not been an easy task: six assembly assistants accompanied the winning duo in a workflow carried out with Avid Media Composer, a solution that, in the words of Jaume Martí, provided important benefits on a collaborative level: “Beyond the fact that we could all work at the same time, we had to send materials to sound, music, effects... We had to be very orderly and meticulous when recording.”

The technical execution has been accompanied by a creative work led by J. A. Bayona, who, as Andrés Gil confesses, visited the editing rooms with 'philosophical decisions': "He told us his reflections so that we understood how to edit to reach the sensation he wanted to express. Suddenly, he spoke to us about life and death, and everything transcendent."

When collecting the Goya 2024 for Best Editing, Gil and Martí also dedicated words of affection to the Netflix Spain post-production team, one of the big winners of the evening. "We have reached unsuspected limits. The sound cards were collapsing with up to 20 microphoned characters, and Bayona also recorded almost non-stop and the cards were filled to the limit. In addition, there is the issue of color, since we had many different cameras and optics, and they [Netflix] have been the ones who have been supervising us and helping us in the process,” Gil acknowledges.
