John Mailhot (Image) receives the prestigious David Sarnoff Medal from SMPTE

Contributions to the development and promotion of the SMPTE ST 2110 standard have been awarded to John Mailhot (Imagine Communications) the David Sarnoff Medal 2024, an award given annually by SMPTE.

The David Sarnoff Medal, created in 1950 and sponsored by SRI International, recognizes contributions in the development of new techniques or equipment that have improved the engineering phases of television technology. This year's award was given to Mailhot for his important role in promoting the adoption of the ST 2110 standard, not only through SMPTE, but also through sector organizations such as the Advanced Media Workflow Association (AMWA), the Alliance for IP Media Solutions (AIMS) and the Video Services Forum (VSF).

Since graduating from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 1988, Mailhot has contributed to the transformation of the broadcast industry. In his career, his work in the development of the Grand Alliance system for the distribution of high-definition television over the air stands out, which evolved to become the norma 1.0 of the Advanced Television Standards Committee (ATSC), which is still used today. He also participated in the standardization of video transport JPEG-2000 (VSF TR-01) and in the development of standards SMPTE ST 2022-2 y 2022-6, and since 2013 he has been one of those responsible for the standard SMPTE ST 2110 for transporting video over IP.

Currently, Mailhot acts as senior vice president of product management at Imagine Communications, in addition to being a member of the board of directors of VSF y CLOTHING and chairs the AIMS Technical Working Group.
